August 1st UPI Rules Changes Implemented in UPI?
- Balance check limit: Now you will be able to check your bank balance more than 50 times in a day from any one UPI app.
- Timing of auto-pay transactions: Auto-pays (such as EMI, subscription or bill payments) will now happen at fixed time slots instead of any time of the day.
- Limit on checking transaction status: If a payment gets stuck, you can check its status only 3 times, that too with a gap of 90 seconds each time.
August 1st UPI Rules Changes: Why this Change?
NPCI states that there is a significant load on the UPI system, particularly during peak hours (10 am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 9:30 pm). Checking the balance or transaction status repeatedly slows down the system.
Recently, in March and April 2025, UPI experienced two major outages (system downtime incidents), which affected millions of users. These changes are an attempt to make the system fast, reliable and uninterrupted.
Autopay Time Slot
Auto-pay transactions (like Netflix subscription, mobile recharge, or EMI) will now be processed during non-peak hours. These times are:
- Before 10 AM
- Between 1 PM and 5 PM
- After 9:30 PM
Will These Changes Apply To All UPI Users?
Yes, these rules will apply to all UPI users, whether you use PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, or any other UPI app. If you do not check your balance frequently or refresh the transaction status, then it will not affect you much.
What Impact Will this Have on Common Users?
Nothing much will change for the common users. Your daily payments, bill payments, or money transfers will work the same way. But if you check your balance more than 50 times a day, you will have to stop when the limit is crossed. Auto-pay payments will happen automatically on time, so you don’t need to do anything.
Is There Any Change in the UPI Transaction Amount Limit?
No, the transaction amount limit will remain the same. For most transactions, the limit is Rs 1 lakh per transaction and up to Rs 5 lakh for healthcare or education-related payments. These changes have nothing to do with that.
