China 10G Broadband Network Launch: China surprised everyone by creating history on the internet.
China has recently launched a 10G broadband network in Sunan County of Hebei province on 20 April 2025. Here “G” means gigabit, not generation. This is the world’s first commercial wired broadband network that provides speeds up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps).

It is not related to wireless mobile networks such as 5G or 6G. It uses advanced fiber-optic technology 50G Passive Optical Network (50G-PON). Huawei and China Unicom have jointly launched this network.

Talking about the speed of this network, it offers a download speed of 9,834 Mbps and an upload speed of 1,008 Mbps with 3 millisecond latency. Understand this speed in such a way that downloading a 4K movie of about 20 GB usually takes about 7-10 minutes on a 1 Gbps connection. With the new 10G broadband network, it will take less than 20 seconds.

Uses of the 10G Broadband Network

  • 10G networks are designed to support data-intensive, low-latency applications.
  • This will be useful in seamless cloud gaming, remote surgery, and AI-driven smart homes.
  • 10G network will also support smart cities, telemedicine, remote education and smart agriculture.
  • For example, it can handle real-time data processing for autonomous driving systems. This is part of China’s plans.

China Surpasses UAE, Qatar in Broadband Speed

It has surpassed the current commercial broadband speeds of countries like the UAE and Qatar, where the average speed is 543 Mbps and 521 Mbps, respectively. The initial launch in Sunan County and Xiong’an is part of a broader national strategy that China wants to expand to 168 locations.
