FASTag Rules From 17th February 2025: What is Fastag?
Fastag is an electronic sticker. It has a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip. It is pasted on the windscreen of the vehicle. It is attached to the driver’s bank account or Fastag wallet. With the help of Fastag, a toll fee is paid without stopping at the toll plaza. This saves time and fuel.
Why was the new rule introduced? The government’s objective behind implementing this rule is to reduce the long queues of vehicles at the toll due to the hassle of FASTag and to facilitate the journey. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways have issued some important changes to the FASTag ecosystem, aimed at streamlining toll payments, reducing disputes, and curbing fraud.
What is the New FASTag Rules From 17th February 2025?
According to the new rules, if the Fastag remains inactive for more than 60 minutes before the vehicle crosses the toll and for 10 minutes after crossing the toll, the transaction will be rejected. The system will reject such payment by writing ‘error code 176″. According to the new guidelines, if the toll transaction is done more than 15 minutes after the vehicle passes the toll reader, Fastag users may have to pay additional charges.
After the new rule, now users will have to recharge Fastag first. As per the updated National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) guidelines, if any transaction is delayed and users have a low balance in their Fastag account, the toll operator will be held responsible. Earlier, users could proceed further by recharging Fastag at the tollbooth itself. After the new rule, now users will have to recharge Fastag first.
FASTag Rules From 17th February 2025: Avoid Penalties?
To avoid penalties, Fastag users should maintain sufficient balance in their accounts before reaching the toll plaza. To avoid blacklisting, it is important to keep KYC details updated with Fastag. Apart from this, you should check your Fastag balance status before long journeys. With this, passengers can avoid extra toll charges.
According to the latest data from NPCI, the number of Fastag transactions has increased by 6 percent to 38.2 crore in December, which was 35.9 crore in November. Also, the value of Fastag transactions has increased by 9 percent to Rs 6,642 crore, which was Rs 6,070 crore in November 2024
Fastag is mandatory on all types of vehicles except two-wheelers. Even if your Fastag is blacklisted, you can use the toll road by paying in cash. However, for this, you will be charged double the normal toll fee.
