Why were Subscription Plan Prices Reduced in India?

According to a media report, Elon Musk’s company X has reduced the prices of its subscription plans in India to attract users in the world’s second-largest internet market. X’s plans on mobile apps are priced higher because the company is charging Google and Apple’s in-app commissions to customers.

Musk has long been trying to increase X’s revenue through subscriptions other than ads. However, a large part of the company’s revenue still comes from ads.

According to estimates by app intelligence firm AppFigures, by December 2024, X had earned $16.5 million (Rs 142 crore) from in-app purchases through mobile apps.

X launched its subscription in India in 2023. This was followed by the launch of its Twitter Blue subscription plan in India in February 2023. The company had increased the price of its most expensive plan, Premium+, twice in the last year.
