Good News for Silver Jewellery Shoppers: What is Hallmarking?

Hallmarking is a kind of government certificate that guarantees how pure your silver or gold jewellery is. Just like gold has a hallmark of 22 carat or 18 carat, silver will also have a special mark indicating its purity. This is checked by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) so that you do not get fake or adulterated goods.

When will this Hallmarking Start on Silver Jewellery?

This rule can be implemented from 1 September 2025. Initially, it will be voluntary; that is, jewellers will adopt it if they want. But later it can also be made mandatory, as it happened for gold.

Good News for Silver Jewellery Shoppers: Benefits of Halmarking

  • Purity guaranteed: Hallmarking will let you know how pure the silver is. No shopkeeper will be able to sell you adulterated silver.
  • Trust will increase: When you buy jewellery, you will not have the fear of being cheated.
  • Fraud will stop: Many times, people buy silver at a low price, but later they come to know that there was less silver and more other metals in it. Hallmarking will stop this fraud.
  • Ease of selling: If you wish to sell your jewellery later, hallmarked jewellery enjoys greater trust and can fetch a good price.

How does Hallmarking Work?

In hallmarking, a special mark is put on silver jewellery. It has a 6-digit unique code (HUID), which is different for every jewellery. This code tells that the jewellery has been checked as per the standards of BIS.
*There will be 6 grades for silver, such as 800, 835, 900, 925,970 and 990, which will show the level of purity.

Will Old Silver Jewellery also be Hallmarked?

No, this rule will not apply to old jewellery. However, if you want, you can get your old jewellery hallmarked by getting it checked at BIS centres. This is completely at your discretion.

Good News for Silver Jewellery Shoppers: What Should Customers Do?

Customers just have to keep in mind that whenever they buy silver jewellery after September 1, they must check for the hallmark. If the shopkeeper says that there is no hallmark, then ask him for proof of the purity of the jewellery.
