No AC Campaign Returns
App-based cab drivers in Hyderabad have announced to keep the AC of the cabs off during travel from today. This is being done in protest against the fare fixing policy of companies like Ola, Uber and Rapido. Cab drivers are already boycotting airport rides. According to Telangana Today, TGPWU president Sheikh Salahuddin said the union will protest through various methods, including a ‘No AC Campaign Returns‘, against the unfair pricing offered by cab aggregators.
Cab Driver Union President Said on No AC Campaign Returns
Cab Driver Union President Sheikh Salahuddin said that there is a difference of about 300 to 400 rupees in the fares of taxi service providers and prepaid taxis. The long wait for the return ride from the airport (usually 3-4 hours) and the 30% commission of the companies further reduce the earnings.
No AC Campaign
The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union wants cab aggregators to implement a uniform fare structure similar to the government-mandated prepaid taxi fares, which includes fuel costs, maintenance and fair compensation for the driver’s services.” The union had already carried out a similar ‘No AC Campaign’ in April 2024. Then the drivers argued that when the AC is on, it costs Rs 16-18 per kilometre. Whereas, when the AC is off, the drivers earn Rs 10-12 per kilometre.
The heat is increasing As the heat increases, customers will have to deal with the problem of taxi drivers refusing to turn on the air conditioner, as this increases fuel consumption, and drivers suffer losses.
TGPWU has asked customers to consider tipping drivers for providing AC services and understand the financial challenges faced by cab drivers.
Following the ‘No AC Campaign Returns‘, many cab drivers plan to surrender their vehicles to the Road Transport Authority (RTA), Telangana Today reported. The TGPWU has urged the government to intervene and provide relief to cab drivers by regulating the pricing policies for cab aggregators and enforcing uniform and reasonable charges.

The Matter of Discrimination in Online Taxi Booking Has Reached Parliament
Earlier, the matter of cab companies like Ola and Uber charging different fares from iPhone and Android users has reached the Parliament. The central government told the Parliament on March 12 that this matter has been taken seriously and an investigation has been started.
A survey conducted in January found different prices on both operating systems for the same ride. Experts are calling this a case of ‘dark pattern’. This can include unreasonable changes in prices, extortion and hidden charges. Doing this is illegal under consumer law.
