The country’s first fully indigenous 32-bit microprocessor chip, Vikram, has been launched at the Semicon India 2025 event. This chip has been made by the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and has been specially designed for space missions.
Chips are Digital Diamonds
During the launch, this chip was handed over to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav. At the event, Modi said that earlier, oil was called black gold, but now chips are digital diamonds.
About the Vikram Chips
- Vikram is India’s first 32-bit microprocessor, completely designed and manufactured in the country.
- This chip is so robust that it can withstand the tough conditions of launching a rocket into space.
- Temperature capability is designed to operate in temperatures ranging from -55°C to +125°C.
- Developer: This chip has been jointly developed by Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) and Semiconductor Lab (SCL).
- It is based on 18180-nanometer MOS technology. The first batch of this chip was tested in the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM-4) during the PSLV-C60 mission, where it powered the mission management computer.
Speciality of Vikram
- The chip runs on a 32-bit general-purpose architecture, which is more advanced than the earlier 16-bit Vikram 1601 chip.
- Supports 64-bit floating-point operations, which are essential for complex calculations. This is especially useful for accurate calculations in space missions, scientific research.
Semiconductor chips are essential in every sector today – healthcare, transportation, communications, defence, and space. These chips are important not only for technological development, but also for economic security and strategic independence. With the Vikram chip, India will now reduce its dependence on foreign chips, especially in sensitive sectors like space and defence.
Earlier today, interacted with leading CEOs from the world of semiconductors during SEMICON India 2025. Their confidence in India’s potential is evident and they are betting big on India as a global hub for semiconductor innovation and manufacturing. I talked about India's… pic.twitter.com/9Eba4xyLRI
