UPI Changes from February 1st 2025: UPI payments have expanded in India in the last few years. Now in such a situation, you cannot make UPI payment from February 1, 2025. Don’t worry, we will explain the whole story to you in detail. If any UPI app uses special characters (like @, #, $, etc.) in the transaction ID, that transaction will be canceled. However, most commonly used apps like Paytm and Phonepe do not use special characters in transaction IDs.
National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has directed all UPI apps to use only alphanumeric (letters and numbers) characters in transaction IDs. If the apps do not follow this rule, their transactions will be rejected after February 1, 2025. NPCI had issued a circular on 9 January 2025.

UPI Changes from February 1st 2025
Recently, the rules have been changed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and it has been made clear that now no special characters can be included in the UPI ID. The platform has clarified that after February 1, 2025, payments will fail if UPI IDs or transaction IDs contain special characters. If there is a special character in your UPI ID then you will have to make the change immediately.
On January 9, a circular was issued by NPCI, in which new rules have been mentioned. It is clearly stated that now UPI transaction ID can only be alphanumeric. That is, it can contain only numbers and letters and no special characters should be part of it. The system will automatically reject any transaction ID containing special characters.
UPI Changes from February 1st 2025: Automatically Generate UPI ID
Although popular payment apps automatically generate UPI IDs, users get the option to create their custom UPI ID or make changes to the existing ID. If your existing UPI ID contains any special characters and you are getting the option to edit it, then remove the special characters. Apart from this, selected payment apps will automatically make changes to the existing ID.
The new rules coming into effect from February 1 mean that if you do not make changes in time, you will not be able to make UPI payments. If UPI payments fail repeatedly, it could also be due to special characters in your UPI ID or transaction ID.
App will not work If any UPI app does not follow this rule then UPI transactions will not work from that app. This rule applies to business users. But it will affect common users also. This is because if you use UPI from any app that does not follow this rule, your payment will be canceled.
Hence The Step Taken
NPCI has already given time to all UPI apps to make this change so that they make the transaction ID 35 digits alphanumeric. Apart from this, apps have also been advised to avoid duplicate transaction IDs. Experts say that this change will improve the system. It will be easier to track transactions and security will also increase.
