Millions of people in India use Google Pay for services like mobile recharge and bill payments. Till now Google Pay was providing its services for free, but now the company has started charging processing fees from users on some transactions.

Now you will have to pay the extra charge for paying utility bills through the digital payment app Google Pay. Users will now have to pay a 0.5 to 1% platform fee for services like gas cylinder booking, paying the electricity bill, DTH recharge, and Fastag recharge through the debit-credit card.

According to media reports, the user will also have to pay a GST charge on the convenience fee.
Earlier in 2023, Google Pay had announced a charge service charge on mobile recharge. Currently, on recharging mobile through Google Pay, users have to pay an extra charge of up to Rs 3. At the same time, on recharging through PhonePe, a service fee of up to Rs 2 has to be paid. This charge is levied differently depending on the amount of recharge.

It is worth noting that this charge will also be applicable on payments made through the Rupay card. Card payment will also not be allowed in certain bill categories. How is the processing fee calculated? Processing fees, i.e. convenience charges, vary based on several parameters including the bill amount. According to Google Pay, before paying the bill, you can see the processing fee charged separately along with the bill amount.

How to view processing fees on Google Pay? If a processing fee applies, you’ll see it along with the amount of any bill when you make a payment. You can also see the processing fee in the transaction history of the Google Pay app. It lists the processing fee charged along with the bill amount. If your bill payment fails, the entire bill amount along with processing fees is refunded to your account within a specified time frame.

Google Pay’s January Transactions: ₹8.26 Lakh Crore

In January 2025, transactions worth Rs 8.26 lakh crore were made through Google Pay. At the same time, Phone Pay stood first in the country in terms of payments with transactions worth Rs 11.91 lakh crore. Transactions worth Rs 13.92 lakh crore were made through UPI in the country in February. Transactions worth Rs 23,48 lakh crore have taken place through UPI in January 2025. This has increased by more than 1% from December 2024. There was an increase of 39% as compared to January 2024.
